A new year

and I am trying to figure out how I can feel that I have control over the direction and shape of my life. I'd like to feel I am steering things instead of being tossed around at the mercy of outside forces.

A long skinny neck

is what I noticed about this guy at the Sunnyside library.

Noodle counter

at the Flushing Mall. I like the beef noodles. The meals are served on warped plastic cafeteria trays, the noodles come in a metal bowl, and the menu is in Chinese and Korean (the women who run the noodle counter are Chinese and one of them speaks Korean). You can watch them prepare dumplings and such.

Man reading a newspaper

at the Flushing Mall. Drawing brick walls is difficult.

Another man reading a newspaper

at the Flushing mall. Initially I thought I had found a great drawing spot at the mall since there is available seating and bathrooms. Then I noticed the posted signs saying there is a 30 minute time limit, enforced by the security guards.

Another man

sitting on a bench at the sketchy playground. Life in the fast lane.

gathering across from my window.

A man asleep

on a bench at the sketchy playground. Drawing sleeping people is easier since they don't move much. This guy roused himself occasionally and would look over at me suspiciously. From the way his head drooped I was surprised he didn't accidentally drool on himself.

Chess game

at the sketchy playground. It's hard to draw the feet under the tables and depict their position correctly in relation to the bench support posts and the overall perspective.

Older man

at the sketchy playground.

A studious looking man

sitting at the cafe. That was the impression he gave. But perhaps I was mistaken and he wasn't being studious. Maybe he was working out a filing system for his porn collection.

Chess in the cold

at the sketchy playground.

Two Korean women

at the cafe in my neighborhood. The woman on the left wore a stylish leather jacket.

Man reading a newspaper

at the plaza. One of the last times I drew there before winter set in.

A table

at the cafe I drew while sitting next to a girl named Danni, an actress who had a small part in an upcoming movie called Fair Game. She was writing in a notebook and spread out her the table were torn scraps of paper with scribbled notes written on them. She was working on a screenplay.

A man reading

at the cafe. I remember he was absolutely transfixed by the book, gripping it firmly in his hands. His hair was kind of lumpy and uneven.

Dec 16, 2009

Two women

at the Starbucks on 42nd and 3rd ave, near the entrance for the 7 train.

Once the weather gets cold, most of my drawings are done in Starbucks. I usually get a tall caramel apple spice, $3.27 with tax.

Woman at La Guardia airport

She was quite absorbed in her writing. It's unusual to see people working so intensely while in public. I wondered if she was a professional writer. I like seeing people writing manually, not on a computer.

Airport seats are hard to draw because of the way they tilt and the placement of the feet supports.

At a cafe

that was charming and authentic.

Dec 12, 2009

Man with phone

at the plaza, waiting for the girlfriend who showed up later.

Dec 11, 2009

Love birds

at the plaza. I have to admit I was envious of them.

Dec 10, 2009

Two men

at the cafe in my neighborhood. The guy on the right was explaining and gesticulating in an animated manner. I don't know what they were talking about since they were speaking in Spanish.

This is a side view of the man on the left.

Two men talking

at the sketchy playground. When seated there, the line of the top of the fence in the background appears exactly even with the tops of the heads of people sitting at the tables. Real life is not very well composed.

Older woman

sitting in the plaza. I wonder how long she's been going there?

Dec 5, 2009

at Union Square. To the right of me Reverend Billy was talking to a small crowd. I chose to draw these people instead because they weren't moving around as much.

Dec 4, 2009

photos: Clouds

seen from my apartment window. When looking at clouds there is a tiny instant when one is conscious of being trapped in a mortal body.

Man on bench

at the sketchy playground in my neighborhood. It's hard to draw the wooden slats straight and lined up, the metal feet touching the ground correctly, and the circular arm rests consistent.

Two men

engrossed in their conversation.

Man reading

in the plaza on 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd. The wire chairs have angled supports that are difficult to draw. It's also a challenge to make the tables that aren't crooked and wobbly feeling.

photo: The plaza is soothing and helps me relax after a work day. The sound of the waterfall is hypnotic.
